Most punctures caused by nails, screws, or other sharp objects can be safely repaired, especially if the damage is limited to the tread area and is no larger than ¼ inch in diameter. Sidewall damage, large gashes, or punctures too close to the shoulder of the tire typically cannot be repaired safely.
It depends on the location, size, and severity of the damage. If the puncture is minor and falls within repairable guidelines, a professional repair can safely extend the life of the tire. However, if the damage compromises the tire’s structure or is in a non-repairable zone, replacement is the safest choice.
You should never drive on a completely flat tire as it can cause serious damage to your wheel, suspension, and alignment. If your tire is only partially deflated, get to a safe location and have it inspected right away. When in doubt, call roadside assistance or install a spare.
Tires with sidewall punctures, multiple injuries, tread separation, or internal damage are considered unrepairable. Driving too long on a flat can also ruin the tire’s structure. In these cases, a replacement is the only safe option.
