Does Your Flat Tire Need to Be Repaired or Replaced?

Unfortunately, not all flat tires are repairable, and attempting to fix an unrepairable tire can put your safety at risk. Here’s how to know the difference:

Repairable

Small punctures (less than ¼” in diameter) in the tread area

Not Repairable

Sidewall damage, punctures larger than ¼”, or multiple close punctures

At Telle, we follow strict industry guidelines to determine the safest solution, following tire repair best practices:

  • Airtight Seal Every Time: We fully remove the tire to inspect and repair it properly with a complete seal, fixing the flat at the source.
  • Patch & Plug Method: When needed, we use both for long-term protection and an airtight seal that lasts.

If a plug or patch isn’t sufficient, we’ll let you know. And with our wide inventory of quality tires, we’ll help you find a replacement and get it installed fast.

Tire Repair FAQs

We know that auto repairs can raise a lot of questions. We’re here to help.

Most punctures caused by nails, screws, or other sharp objects can be safely repaired, especially if the damage is limited to the tread area and is no larger than ¼ inch in diameter. Sidewall damage, large gashes, or punctures too close to the shoulder of the tire typically cannot be repaired safely.

It depends on the location, size, and severity of the damage. If the puncture is minor and falls within repairable guidelines, a professional repair can safely extend the life of the tire. However, if the damage compromises the tire’s structure or is in a non-repairable zone, replacement is the safest choice.

You should never drive on a completely flat tire as it can cause serious damage to your wheel, suspension, and alignment. If your tire is only partially deflated, get to a safe location and have it inspected right away. When in doubt, call roadside assistance or install a spare.

Tires with sidewall punctures, multiple injuries, tread separation, or internal damage are considered unrepairable. Driving too long on a flat can also ruin the tire’s structure. In these cases, a replacement is the only safe option.

At Telle Tire, we use industry-standard patch-plug repair methods that seal both the inner lining and the puncture track. After removing the tire, our technicians inspect it thoroughly, repair the damage from the inside, and rebalance the tire for a safe, reliable ride.
