Yes, new tires usually have a short break-in period of about 500 miles. During this time, the tread surface wears in, and any manufacturing lubricants wear off. You may notice slightly different handling or braking at first—this is completely normal. After the break-in period, your tires will deliver their full performance.
Signs you need new tires include low tread depth (less than 2/32 of an inch), visible cracks or bulges, uneven wear, or a noticeable drop in traction and handling. You can also use the “penny test”—if you insert a penny into the tread and can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time for a replacement.
